New San Francisco dispensary Kushology adds to Ocean Avenue’s offerings

San Francisco’s Ocean Avenue corridor has a new cannabis shop serving the city’s southern side: Kushology, a locally owned dispensary at 1019 Ocean Ave. and a proud sponsor of SF Space Walk 2026.

Opened on Oct. 28, 2025, Kushology is moving a lot of pre-rolls, vape carts, and high-end Fig Farms flower to the City College, SF State University, and local residential crowd.

Five years in the making, founder Tyler Makras built the store with a neighborhood-first vision — one rooted in accessibility, education, and community connection. For locals, it’s a new go-to. For visitors, it’s a chance to experience cannabis culture outside the usual tourist zones.

A neighborhood dispensary at a San Francisco crossroads

One of Kushology’s biggest strengths is its location. Ocean Avenue connects multiple slices of city life, with City College of San Francisco, BART access via the Balboa Station, and nearby routes to the Excelsior, Sunset, St. Francis Wood, and Ingleside.

That makes Kushology a natural stop for a wide range of shoppers: students, commuters, longtime residents, and older, wellness-focused customers seeking products like lotions, patches, topicals, and roll-ons. It’s not just a dispensary planted in a busy corridor — it’s a dispensary built for the people who already move through it every day.

Kushology is neighbors with Beep’s Burgers, Philz Coffee, and Pakwan Restaurant.

A smaller shop with a more personal feel

Kushology may be compact at just under 1,000 square feet, but that’s by design. Makras said he didn’t want the oversized, impersonal feel of a giant retail operation. Instead, Kushology is meant to feel approachable, interactive, and educational.

Customers can expect a more personal experience, whether they’re regular cannabis consumers or first-time visitors with questions. Even the name reflects that mission: Kushology, as in the study of kush.

Rooted in San Francisco’s social equity movement

Kushology is also a social equity dispensary, which Makras described as central to the business’s origin story. He founded the shop with support from his social equity partner and said the store would not exist without that pathway.

Makras also spent roughly five years navigating permits, meeting neighbors, and participating in community groups along Ocean Avenue before opening the doors. That groundwork shows in the store’s local orientation and neighborhood credibility.

What to shop for at Kushology

Kushology’s menu reflects both customer demand and Bay Area taste. Makras said the store tries to stock as many local brands as possible while still keeping a broad mix of products on hand.

Our picks of the shop include: Fig Farm’s award-winning Animal Face, Blue Face, and the new Lemon Grapefruit Banana Tangerine. (LGBT)

We also love: Wild Light’s Dank Strainger, Moon Valley’s Hash Burger (Leafly Strain of the Year 2025), and St. Ides’ Strawberry Lemonade Shot.

Kushology + Beeps, Brews, and Boba

Kushology also fits naturally into a wider Ocean Avenue outing. Makras recommends pairing a visit with neighborhood staples the iconic Beep’s Burgers, Ocean Ave Ale House, Java on Ocean and That’s Amore Pizza.

For SF Space Walk readers clicking around the city for new stops, Kushology offers something distinctly San Franciscan: a cannabis shop that feels local, grounded, and connected to the neighborhood around it.
